iOS 4.3 Beta Features…So Far…

Good afternoon everyone!  Happy Mondays…ok, Monday’s aren’t usually great anyway.  🙂

Over the weekend, Apple iOS developers discovered some pretty cool stuff in the beta release of iOS 4.3.  Here are some of the things to note:

New iPad Gestures.  These are “possible” new gestures for the iPad that Apple “might” implement later on, but for now they’re there for testing.

AirPlay for Third Party Apps and Web Apps!  Yes, you read right!  Developers can now take advantage of the AirPlay APIs and stream video content from their apps to an Apple TV 2.  It would be cool if this worked for games too!  As far as AirPlay for web apps go, developers will need to put in strings of H.264  code as well as the special containers that will allow Safari to recongize if the content has been authorized to utilize AirPlay.  This is probably in place so movie/TV studios don’t freak out with unauthorized content being streamed to TVs.

New FaceTime icon.  The background is Silver now.  I think it will be most noticeable on the iPod Touch.

Full Screen iAd adds for the iPad.  We all know what iAds are so there’s no need to explain this further.

You can now configure the side switch on the iPad to be either rotation lock or mute/silent switch!  So for you people who miss rotation lock switch on the iPad, you’re getting a choice.

Someone found new camera lens effects buried in a plist file.  You can’t use them yet, but it sounds like Photo Booth for the Mac will be making its way to the iPhone.

There are new Repeat Alert Message settings.  You can now customize how often you want to hear a repeated alarm for a missed text message.  You can set it from twice to ten times!  However, it looks like you can’t turn it off totally, so you’ll have to choose which setting you want.  Remember, this is beta 1, so there’s time for Apple to re-add the on/off switch

Looks like there’s a new transparent keyboard layout.  It looks rather cool.  I’ve also heard that it is more responsive than previous keyboards.

It also looks like the App Store Updates section is getting a facelift.  It has a close resemblance to the Mac App Store that launched a couple weeks ago.

Looks like the iPad got a new font as well.

It looks like there are HTTP Live Streaming Stats too.  Wonder what that’ll be useful for.  We’ll see

Oh one more feature… 🙂

I saved the best for last.  Personal Hotspot!  Yup, not just for the VeriPhone, but for GSM phones as well.  I’m assuming it’s going to be activated on carrier by carrier bases.  I hope (very wishful thinking) that AT&T allows US iPhone users to utilize this pretty cool feature.  Hopefully they increase data caps as well for it!

Anyway, I think that covers the list of “possible” features we’ll see in iOS 4.3.  As with any beta release, Apple can easily add or take away features at any time.

Oh, one last note.  Apple is saying farewell to the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G with is iOS release.  Apple has dropped iOS support all together for these devices.  Hopefully this has been helpful for you.  What do you think of these features and what would you like to see in future iOS 4.3 betas or even the official 4.3 release?  Feel free to comment.
