90’s Music

If any of you know me very well, you know that I’m addicted to music.  I have loved music since I was born.  I even have  a birth song.  Yes, you read that right, I have a birth song.

Needless to say, I have a pretty eclectic collection ranging from Jazz, Blues, Classical, Country, Screamo, Rock, Metal, Classic Rock, Oldies, etc, etc, etc.  You get the idea.  🙂

A little while ago, I ran across a tweet from JustAnotheriPhoneBlog that had the lyrics of a late 90’s song called Steal My Sunshine by Len.  When I saw that tweet, a lot of memories began to flood my mind.  I remember first hearing that song at the end of my eighth grade/middle school journey and the song made me laugh.  I don’t know why I laughed but I did.

Now having listened to that song just a few minutes ago, I’m reminded of all the 90’s music that inspired me, moved me, shaped me, and has made me the way I am today.  Matchbox 20, Len, New Radicals, Lou Bega, Will Smith, The Verve, Verve Pipe, Nirvana, Metallica, Alice In Chains, and many many many others are just some of the artists that inspired my musical tastes today.

I have to give my Uncle all the credit for inspiring my early musical tastes.  When I was in first grade, he introduced me to the grunge band Nirvana.  I remember sitting in his car jamming away to Smells Like Teen Spirit and Come As You Are.  I remember my mom not being too happy about that, but she never complained and never restricted my music listening experience.  My dad introduced me the bands he listened to as a kid such as The Everly Brothers, Left Banke, and a few others.  Thanks to those people, I have a vast knowledge of music and a very wide range of favorite music.

But the 90’s music sticks out to me the most as it’s the music I grew up with.  Just listening to some of the artists I mentioned above reminds me when I would sit and play video games such as Sonic The Hedgehog or going over to my neighbor’s house and listening to music while we played basketball in the driveway.

Those days are mostly gone, but listening to those artists and songs brings back the memories and I can see a slide show in my mind of the things I did while listening to those songs.

Music, like a great book, has the ability to transport you to the deepest parts of your memories and allows you to relive your childhood moments for about three to four minutes.  Does music move you like this?  Do you associate your childhood memories to certain artists or songs?  Care to share some of those artists that influenced you when you were young?  Feel free to leave a comment below with your thoughts and feelings.  🙂
